316L Stainless Steel Jewelry: Everyday Wear & Care

Your jewelry should complement your style and fit into your everyday life. At Cloud 9 Mystic Gifts, we want you to feel informed when choosing and caring for your favorite pieces.

This guide covers 316L stainless steel, simple care tips, and a few considerations for sensitive skin and medical appointments.

What is 316L stainless steel?

316L stainless steel, often called surgical steel, is valued for its durability and resistance to corrosion. These qualities make it a practical choice for everyday jewelry.

Like any jewelry material, it still benefits from thoughtful care. Stainless steel can scratch, and coatings or decorative finishes may need gentler handling. Check each product description for the materials and finishes used in that particular piece.

Sensitive skin and choosing your jewelry

Everyone’s skin is different. A material that feels comfortable for one person may not suit another.

316L stainless steel contains trace amounts of nickel and should not be considered nickel-free. Nickel in 316l releases at a very low rate allowing people with minor or no sensitivity to nickel wear it without any issues in most cases. This does not apply to everyone. If you have a known nickel or metal allergy, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before choosing jewelry containing that metal.

If you see jewelry described as “hypoallergenic,” remember that this does not mean allergy-proof or guarantee that no reaction can ever occur. Hypoallergenic simply implies that the material is less likely to cause a reaction. If any piece of body jewelry causes redness, itching, swelling, or discomfort, stop wearing it. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe.

Everyday care made simple

A few gentle habits can help preserve your jewelry’s appearance:

  • Wipe with a soft cloth after wear to remove surface residue.
  • For pieces without special care requirements, clean with mild soap and lukewarm water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • Allow perfumes, lotions, and other skincare products to dry before putting jewelry on.
  • Removing body jewelry before swimming is optional as 316l surgical stainless steel is highly resistant to water, tarnishing and corrosion.
  • Store pieces separately in a dry place to reduce scratches and tangling.

Follow the care instructions for the individual item, especially if it includes stones, glued details, or a decorative finish.

Gold-colored and coated pieces

A stainless steel base and its surface finish are different things. Plating on charms and other coatings such as enamel can wear over time, and their care requirements may differ from those of uncoated steel.

Gentle cleaning and avoiding abrasive products can help protect these finishes.

Body piercings

For new or healing piercings, ask a qualified professional piercer to confirm that the particular piece is suitable. A “316L” or “surgical steel” label alone does not establish suitability for everyone's fresh piercing.

Medical imaging: MRI and X-rays

Before an MRI or X-ray, tell your imaging team about any jewelry or body piercings you’re wearing, including pieces made from 316L stainless steel.

For an MRI, expect to remove metal jewelry and follow the facility’s screening instructions. A “316L” or “surgical steel” label does not establish that a piece is MRI-safe.

For an X-ray, you may be asked to remove jewelry near the area being examined because it can obscure details in the image.

If a piece is difficult to remove or is in a healing piercing, contact the imaging facility before your appointment. Don’t force it out or substitute a retainer without checking with the imaging team.
